At RISE Up Shop we work with indigenous minority women artisans in Northern Thailand to make beautiful, ethically sourced products that fuze ancient wisdom with contemporary design. We predominantly work with women of the Karen, Kayan and Hmong groups. These women are master-weavers and matriarchs in their communities. Their expertly woven textiles are so intricately made, they can be worn for decades.
All textiles are made with 100% cotton threads on a traditional wooden back loom. Importantly, weaving can be done at home, which allows our artisans the flexibility to generate income on their own schedules, while taking care of their families. It is important to us to honor the skills and the ancient wisdom of this traditional weaving practice, therefore we pay our artisans above Fair Trade wages for all textiles we source.
When women are financially empowered, they are able to keep their children in school, and, importantly, do not need to send their young daughters out to earn income in cities where they are most at risk of being trafficked in to slavery. When you financially empower a woman, you financially empower her whole family and help break the cycle of intergenerational poverty.
